Ingredients

  • 2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 4 tsp. salt
  • 8 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 c. water
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1/4 c. lukewarm water

Instructions

  1. Scald milk and add sugar, salt and shortening.
  2. After shortening melts, add water and cool until lukewarm.
  3. Add yeast, softened in 1/4 cup lukewarm water.
  4. Never use hot water as it kills the working power in the yeast (105° to 115°).
  5. Add flour gradually, mixing it in thoroughly.
  6. When dough is stiff, turn on a lightly floured board and knead until smooth and satiny.
  7. Shape into a smooth ball; place in a greased bowl.
  8. Cover with wax paper and a tea towel.
  9. Let rise in a warm place until it doubles in bulk.
