Batter Bread(Makes 2 Loaves)

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/4 c. lukewarm water
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 3 1/4 c. sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Soften the yeast in warm water.
  2. Add scalded milk to sugar, salt and shortening.
  3. Cool to lukewarm.
  4. Add 2 cups of flour.
  5. Beat well with a spoon or mix 1 minute on medium-low speed of mixer. Add softened yeast and egg.
  6. Beat well again.
  7. Add remaining flour to make a thick batter.
  8. Beat until smooth.
  9. Cover and let rise in a warm place (80° to 85°) until doubled.
  10. Stir down and smooth into the two greased 8 x 8 x 2-inch pans.
  11. Cover and let rise until almost doubled (about 50 minutes).
  12. Bake 25 to 35 minutes at 375°.
