Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar or honey
  • 2 c. hot water
  • 1 Tbsp. dry yeast
  • 2/3 c. lukewarm water

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in 2/3 cup warm water; allow to foam.
  2. In a large bowl, combine butter, salt, sugar and hot water.
  3. When
  4. this mixture is lukewarm, combine with yeast.
  5. Add flour a little at a time.
  6. After 4 cups, beat dough vigorously for 10 minutes, then add rest of flour.
  7. Knead until elastic.
  8. Form into ball and let rise 1 1/2 hours.
  9. Punch down and let rise 1 hour.
  10. Butter baking sheet and sprinkle corn meal over the butter.
  11. Divide dough into 3 loaves.
  12. Cover with towel and let rise until doubled.
  13. Brush with cold water.
  14. Bake in preheated 400° oven for
  15. 1 hour.
  16. Every 15 minutes, brush top with cold water for hard crust; keeping a pan of water in oven will help make it crusty also.
