Ingredients

  • 1 quart milk
  • 1 piece butter (egg-sized)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Instructions

  1. Pound the cardamom seeds to crush them, then add to the flour.
  2. Dissolve the yeast cake in 1/4 cup warm water.
  3. Combine milk with a piece of butter the size of an egg and heat until warm.
  4. Mix the warm milk mixture with the sugar, dissolved yeast, salt, and flour to form a soft dough, adding more flour as needed to form a ball.
  5. Stir the mixture until well combined and smooth.
  6. Optionally, add currants or candied fruit into the flour before mixing.
  7. Allow the dough to rise until doubled in size, then shape into a loaf and bake as desired.
