- Wash cucumbers in cold water and slice 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Soak for 3 days in salt brine strong enough to hold an egg (pickling salt and 1 gallon water).
- Pour off salt water, then soak for 3 days in clear water, changing water every day.
- Remove from water; put in kettle and add vinegar, alum and enough hot water to cover.
- Simmer for 1 hour; gently stir several times.
- Drain.
