Ingredients

  • 1 envelope dry milk (to make 1 qt.)
  • 3 1/2 c. warm water
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 2 pkg. yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 2 Tbsp. salt
  • about 12 c. flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve dry milk in 3 1/2 cups warm water; stir in shortening, sugar and salt.
  2. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water; add to milk mixture.
  3. Add 6 cups flour to make smooth batter.
  4. Add 6 more cups.
  5. Knead well on floured board.
  6. Place in greased bowl. Let rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  7. Punch down; let rise 1/2 hour.
  8. Shape into 4 loaves.
  9. Cover; let rise for 45 minutes, until light.
  10. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes.
