  • 1/8 qt. milk
  • 10-5/8 oz. flour
  • Bacon
  • Salt, black pepper, sugar, cumin
  • sour cabbage
  • 1 onion
  • 6 juniper berries

  1. You should begin by peeling the potatoes and grating them into a bowl.
  2. Then add some salt, milk and flour to make a mixture, which is neither too thick nor too thin.
  3. After that, form the mixture into little dumplings, throwing them straight into a pot of boiling, salty water.
  4. After the dumplings have been cooked for about 10 minutes, they rise to the top of the water.
  5. At this point take the pot off the hob, and drain the water away. The stewed cabbage is prepared in a separate pot.
  6. Pour oil into the pot, and then add a diced onion, together with 1 spoonful of sugar and let this mixture caramelize.
  7. After that add a pinch of cumin, a pinch of ground black pepper, half a dozen juniper berries, and a 2lbs of sour cabbage.
  8. Let this stew for about half an hour, and add water if required.
  9. Finally, mix the stewed, sour cabbage in with the dumplings, and then serve with fried bacon, cut into small pieces, on top.
  10. Of course, Halusky s kaputou is best served with some fresh bread and a glass of Slovak beer!
