- 1/2 lb. fresh lard
- 1/4 lb. bees wax
- 2 oz. pulverized camphor
- 3 oz. white rosin ⓘ
- 2 drams balsam of Peru
- 2 drams oil of cedar
- 1 oz. turpentine
Instructions
- Put the fresh lard and bees wax together and melt them.
- Melt the pulverized camphor in the mixture.
- Add all the other ingredients except for turpentine.
- Cook until all ingredients are melted and well combined.
- Remove from stove and then add turpentine (note: turpentine is inflammable).
Tips & Substitutions
When making Lung Fever Salve, ensure the lard and beeswax are thoroughly melted before adding the camphor, as it dissolves better in a warmer mixture. If you don't have beeswax, you can substitute it with soy wax for a vegan alternative. Additionally, be cautious with the turpentine; it's flammable and should be added after removing the mixture from heat.
Serving Suggestions
Apply the salve to the chest or affected areas as needed for relief. It pairs well with a warm compress for enhanced soothing effects. For a comforting experience, consider enjoying a cup of herbal tea alongside your application, creating a perfect self-care moment.
Storage & Reheating
Store the salve in a cool, dark place in an airtight container to maintain its effectiveness. It can also be refrigerated for extended shelf life. If the salve becomes too firm, gently warm it in your hands or in a warm water bath before use to restore its consistency.
