Spiced Fruit Butter

A warm, spiced fruit butter blending tender fruit with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, perfect as a spread or topping for breakfast and snacks, suitable for all ages.

Ingredients

  • 3 lb. apples, pears or peaches
  • 3/4 cup apple juice, pear nectar or peach nectar
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 5 teaspoons Equal for Recipes or 16 packets Equal sweetener or 2/3 cup Equal Spoonful

Instructions

  1. Peel, core or pit the fruit, then slice.
  2. In a Dutch oven, combine the prepared fruit, fruit juice, and spices.
  3. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until the fruit is very tender.
  4. Cool slightly.
  5. Puree the mixture in a blender, food processor, or food mill, in batches if necessary.
  6. Return the pureed fruit to the Dutch oven.
  7. Simmer uncovered over low heat, stirring frequently, until the desired consistency is reached (about 10 minutes to 1 1/2 hours).
  8. Remove from heat and stir in the sweetener (Equal).
  9. Transfer the fruit butter to freezer containers or jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace.
  10. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
