Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1/3 c. shortening, melted
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 2 1/2 c. milk, scalded and cooled
  • 5 to 5 1/2 c. white flour
  • 3 Tbsp. dark molasses
  • 2 1/4 c. whole wheat flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  2. Add sugar, shortening, salt and milk.
  3. Mix and then add 3 cups white flour. Beat.
  4. Divide in half. Stir in enough white flour to make a stiff dough.
  5. To the other, add molasses and enough wheat flour to make a dough. Knead both doughs well and let rise until doubled. Roll out both doughs to a 12 x 8-inch rectangle.
  6. Place dark atop light. Cut in half and roll up, placing in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Let rise until doubled, then bake at 375° for 30 to 35 minutes.
