Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup shortening
  • salt

Instructions

  1. Wash and cut the chicken into pieces.
  2. Lightly salt and pepper the chicken, then dredge in flour.
  3. Place shortening into a frypan over medium heat.
  4. Brown the chicken in the frypan.
  5. Transfer browned chicken to a large pot with a lid.
  6. Pour remaining drippings from the frypan over the chicken.
  7. Cover the chicken with water.
  8. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
  9. Remove the chicken from the pot.
  10. The gravy will have formed naturally in the pot.
  11. Serve the chicken with the gravy poured over rice or potatoes.
