Ingredients

  • 6 Winesap apples or other cooking apples
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup red wine or sherry
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 stick cinnamon, broken into pieces
  • Red food coloring

Instructions

  1. Peel and quarter the apples.
  2. Mix together sugar, water, red wine or sherry, butter, cornstarch, cinnamon, and red food coloring.
  3. Pour the mixture over the apples in a 9 x 12-inch baking dish.
  4. Bake at 275°F (135°C) for 1 hour, basting occasionally.
  5. Serve warm or cold with ham, pork roast, chops, or barbecue.
