Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • nuts or small pieces of fruit (optional)
  • rock salt
  • crushed ice

Instructions

  1. Combine milk, whipping cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and optional nuts or fruit in a clean 1-pound coffee can with a tight-fitting lid.
  2. Secure the lid with tape for extra security.
  3. Place the 1-pound can inside a 3-pound coffee can with a tight-fitting lid.
  4. Pack crushed ice around the smaller can and pour almost 1 cup of rock salt over the ice.
  5. Put the lid on the 3-pound can.
  6. Roll the can back and forth on the floor or sidewalk for 10 minutes.
  7. Carefully remove the inside can, ensuring no salt solution drops into the ice cream.
  8. Stir the ice cream mixture with a rubber spatula.
  9. Replace the lid on the small can.
  10. Drain the ice water and nest the cans inside each other.
  11. Pack more ice and salt around the cans.
  12. Roll back and forth for 5 more minutes.
