Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups scalded milk
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6 to 7 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 small packages yeast
  • 1/3 cup lukewarm water
  • 4 eggs

Instructions

  1. Soften the yeast in lukewarm water and add a sprinkle of sugar to help it activate; stir and set aside.
  2. In a pan, warm the scalded milk, shortening, and sugar, taking care not to scorch the mixture.
  3. Allow the milk mixture to cool to lukewarm temperature.
  4. Add the yeast mixture to the cooled milk mixture and stir well.
  5. Beat the eggs and add them to the mixture, stirring to combine.
  6. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until the dough is workable.
  7. Let the dough rise until it has doubled in size.
  8. Work the risen dough thoroughly and divide into rolls.
  9. Shape the rolls and let them rise again until nearly doubled.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) until golden brown, approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
