Ingredients

  • 1/2 oz. fresh yeast
  • pinch of sugar
  • scant 1/2 pt. lukewarm water
  • 1 lb. plain flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. Crisco oil

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast with a pinch of sugar in about 1/2 cup water.
  2. Set aside in a warm place about 10 minutes.
  3. In the meantime, sift the flour and salt into a large warmed bowl.
  4. Make a well in the center and add the oil and yeast mixture.
  5. Work the dough vigorously, adding the remaining lukewarm water to make a soft dough.
  6. Cover with a damp cloth and set aside in a warm draft. Put a little oil in the bottom of the bowl to keep the dough surface dry.
