Five-Spice Beef Ribs

Ingredients

  • 3 to 4 lb. beef short ribs, cut into serving size pieces
  • 1/2 c. soy sauce
  • 1/4 c. dry sherry or orange juice
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 2 tsp. five spice powder or 1/2 tsp each: crushed fennel seed, ground cinnamon, aniseed, crushed szechwan peppercorns or 1/4 tsp. pepper and 1/4 tsp. ground cloves

Instructions

  1. Place ribs in a plastic bag, set into a deep bowl.
  2. For marinade, combine soy sauce, sherry or orange juice, garlic, sugar, lemon juice and 5 spices.
  3. Pour mixture over ribs.
  4. Seal bag. Marinate in refrigerator 6 to 24 hours turning bag occasionally. Remove ribs from bag, reserving marinade.
  5. Place ribs, bone side down in a shallow roasting pan.
  6. Pour marinade over ribs.
  7. Bake, covered, in a 350° oven for 2 to 2 1/2 hours or until tender. Makes 4 servings.
