Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. tallow
  • 1/3 as much beeswax as tallow

Instructions

  1. Melt the tallow and beeswax together and pour into a container.
  2. Wash 2 quarts of cold water nine times, changing the water each time.
  3. Squeeze out most of the water with your hands after each wash.
  4. At the last heating, add a piece of camphor gum the size of a small hickory nut, broken into small pieces to melt more readily.
  5. Roll the mixture into balls.
  6. While doing so, work out the particles of water, keeping a dry rag to wipe hands as they become moist.
  7. Reheat the salve before application when needed.
  8. Store in waxed paper.

Tips & Substitutions

To achieve a smoother salve, ensure the tallow and beeswax are melted together completely without any lumps. If you prefer a fragrant salve, consider adding essential oils such as lavender or eucalyptus after melting. For a vegan alternative, explore using plant-based waxes instead of beeswax. Remember, the water washing process helps to ensure a smooth texture, so don't skip that step.

Serving Suggestions

This salve is perfect for soothing dry skin or minor abrasions. For a complete pampering experience, pair it with a warm bath and use alongside a gentle scrub. It can also be a thoughtful gift when packaged nicely, perhaps alongside homemade Honey-Avocado Butter for a delightful skincare combo.

Storage & Reheating

Store the salve in a cool, dry place wrapped in waxed paper to maintain its consistency and prevent moisture absorption. If the salve hardens too much, you can gently reheat it in a double boiler to soften it before use. Ensure the container is airtight to prolong its shelf life and maintain freshness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of fat instead of tallow?

Yes, you can substitute tallow with other fats like coconut oil or shea butter for a different texture and scent. Keep in mind that each fat may alter the salve's consistency and how it feels on the skin, so adjustments to the beeswax ratio might be necessary.

How do I know when the salve is ready to be poured?

The salve is ready to pour when both the tallow and beeswax have fully melted and blended together, creating a uniform mixture. If you see any unmelted bits, continue heating gently until everything is smooth, as this will help your salve set up better once cooled.

How long does this salve last?

When stored properly in a cool, dry place, this salve can last up to a year. Always check for any changes in smell or texture before use, as these can indicate spoilage. For best results, avoid introducing moisture into the container during application.
