Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons salad oil
  • 2 cups sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle yeast into the warm water and stir until dissolved.
  2. Stir in sugar, salt, and salad oil.
  3. Add 2 cups of sifted flour and beat until smooth, then gradually stir in the additional 1 1/2 cups of flour.
  4. Dough should be as soft as biscuit dough.
  5. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place in a greased bowl and brush the top with soft shortening.
  7. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°F), free from drafts, until doubled in bulk.
  8. Punch down and divide the dough in half.
  9. Form each half into a ball and place on a greased baking sheet.
  10. Press out with palms of hands into circles about 12 inches in diameter, making edges slightly thick.
