Ingredients

  • 1 package yeast
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 3 cups lukewarm water or water and milk mixture
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup dark molasses
  • 4 tablespoons shortening
  • 4 cups graham flour
  • 8 cups white flour

Instructions

  1. Mix yeast and lukewarm water and set aside to activate.
  2. Scald the mixture of milk and water, then add sugar, salt, and shortening.
  3. Cool the mixture, then add molasses and the yeast mixture.
  4. Combine graham flour and white flour, then add to the wet ingredients, kneading until the dough is softer than typical white bread dough.
  5. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough twice, then shape into loaves and let rise slightly before baking.
  7. Bake at 325°F for approximately 40 minutes until golden brown.
