Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups warm water
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 small packages yeast
  • 4 tablespoons shortening
  • 4 1/2 tablespoons garlic salt
  • 9 to 12 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  3. Add sugar and mix well.
  4. Add shortening and garlic salt, then gradually mix in flour until dough is smooth.
  5. Let the dough stand in a warm place, punching down every 10 minutes for a total of 5 times.
  6. Divide the dough into 3 equal parts.
  7. Roll each part into a rectangle and roll up like a jelly roll.
  8. Brush the rolled dough with cold water and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  9. Let the shaped dough rise until doubled in size.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until golden brown.
