- Combine milk, potatoes, shortening, sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Let stand until lukewarm.
- Add yeast, softened in water.
- Add eggs.
- Beat in 1 1/2 cups flour, then add the balance to make a stiff dough.
- Turn out on a board and knead thoroughly. Return to greased bowl and butter top, then let rise 2 hours. Chill in refrigerator, but remove 1 1/2 hours before serving time. Roll dough 1/2 inch thick and cut into 2-inch diamonds.
- Dip each diamond in melted butter and arrange alternately in layers around a well-buttered mold.
- Let rise until double in bulk, then bake at 400° for about 20 minutes.
