Mulled wine recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 x 18.7cl bottle of full bodied Spanish red wine (Rioja is ideal)
  • 1 Navel orange
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 mulled wine sachet, OR 1 bayleaf and a grating of fresh nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Place the wine, water, sugar, cinnamon stick, spice sachet (or bay leaf and nutmeg), sliced lemons and a few slices of Navel orange into a large saucepan.
  2. Heat to just below boiling point and hold this temperature for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Remove the sachet (or bay leaf) and strain into heatproof glasses.
  4. Serve with Navel orange slices and a few segments of tangerine, clementine or satsuma - whichever tickles your fancy.
