Ingredients

  • 1 can Eagle Brand milk
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 11 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Add enough warm water to the canned milk to make one quart.
  2. Add the melted shortening to this mixture.
  3. In a separate bowl, add yeast cake and sugar to lukewarm water and let stand for 3 minutes.
  4. Add the salt to the liquid mixture.
  5. Gradually add flour to make a stiff dough suitable for kneading.
  6. Let the dough rise until doubled in size, covered with a wet towel.
  7. Knead the dough again until it is light and springy.
  8. Divide the dough into four equal parts and shape each into a loaf.
  9. Place the loaves in greased pans and let rise until light, not quite doubled in bulk.
  10. Bake in a 350°F oven for 30 minutes.
