- Measure 6 cups of sifted flour.
- Combine milk, sugar, and shortening in a saucepan; scald, but do not boil.
- Cool to lukewarm, then add yeast cakes and let stand 5 to 10 minutes, stirring until dissolved.
- Add salt.
- Gradually beat in the sifted flour.
- Turn out on a floured board and knead gently until smooth.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place (80° to 85°F) until doubled in size.
