Ingredients

  • 6 cups sifted flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 yeast cakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Measure 6 cups of sifted flour.
  2. Combine milk, sugar, and shortening in a saucepan; scald, but do not boil.
  3. Cool to lukewarm, then add yeast cakes and let stand 5 to 10 minutes, stirring until dissolved.
  4. Add salt.
  5. Gradually beat in the sifted flour.
  6. Turn out on a floured board and knead gently until smooth.
  7. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place (80° to 85°F) until doubled in size.
