  3. Pour the tomato juice into a large heavy kettle.
  4. Add salt, garlic powder, parsley flakes, vegetable oil, pizza or Italian seasoning, and Parmesan/Romano cheese mixture to the kettle.
  5. Cook the mixture until it thickens and reduces to about half its original volume.
  6. Ladle the hot sauce into pint jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace.
  7. Cover with lids and bands, then process in a boiling water bath canner for 35 minutes.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using San Marzano tomatoes as a substitution for Roma. If you prefer a fresher taste, add some fresh basil or oregano towards the end of cooking. If you want a spicier kick, incorporate red pepper flakes. Remember to adjust the salt based on your taste and dietary needs, especially if serving with salty dishes like Stuffed Manicotti Shells.

Serving Suggestions

This pizza sauce is perfect for homemade pizzas but also serves well as a dipping sauce for garlic bread or as a base for Italian recipes. Try it with Gnocchi (Potato Dumpling) or as a topping for classic dishes like Classic Fettuccine Alfredo. Pair with a simple salad for a complete meal.

Storage & Reheating

Once cooled, store the canned pizza sauce in a cool, dark place. If you have leftover sauce after opening a jar, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to a week. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, stirring occasionally to ensure even heating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze this pizza sauce instead of canning it?

Yes, this pizza sauce can be frozen! Allow it to cool completely before transferring to freezer-safe containers. It will keep well for up to 6 months in the freezer. Just thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating and using it on your favorite dishes.

How can I adjust the thickness of the sauce?

If you find the sauce too thick, you can add a little water or vegetable broth while cooking. If it's too thin, continue simmering to reduce it further. Be sure to stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Adjusting the cooking time will help you achieve your desired consistency.

Is it necessary to add cheese to the sauce?

Adding cheese is optional but enhances the flavor significantly. If you're looking for a dairy-free option, simply omit the cheese or substitute with nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor without dairy. Experiment with different cheese blends to find your perfect mix!
