Shortbread Heart Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar packed
  • 3 cups flour, all-purpose
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300F (150C).
  2. Cream the butter; gradually add the sugar, beating with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  3. Sift together the flour and salt.
  4. Add to the creamed mixture and stir with a wooden spoon to thoroughly combine.
  5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured board to 1/4 inch thickness.
  6. Cut out with heart-shaped cookie cutters.
  7. Place on an ungreased or parchment-lined cookie sheet.
  8. Sprinkle with red sugar crystals, if desired.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until lightly browned.
  10. Decorate with icing if desired.
  11. Store in airtight containers with waxed paper between the layers of cookies.
