Crispy, golden fried bread known as sopaipillas offers a delightful combination of light texture and subtle sweetness, perfect for sharing with butter or honey.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons shortening
  • about 1 1/4 cups milk
  • salad oil

Instructions

  1. Sift the flour; measure and sift again with salt, baking powder, and sugar.
  2. Cut in the shortening and add milk gradually to make a soft dough, just firm enough to roll.
  3. Cover the bowl and let it stand for 30 to 60 minutes.
  4. Roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured board.
  5. Cut into diamond-shaped pieces.
  6. Heat about 1 inch of salad oil in a frying pan to about 370° to 380°F.
  7. Add a few pieces at a time to the hot oil.
  8. Turn immediately so they puff evenly.
  9. Then turn back to brown both sides.
  10. Drain on paper towels.
  11. Serve with butter or honey.
