Ingredients

  • 2 c. warm water
  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 6 c. flour
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening, melted
  • 2 tsp. oil

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, dry yeast, salt, and sugar. Let sit until the yeast activates and becomes frothy, about 5-10 minutes.
  2. Add melted shortening and oil to the yeast mixture and stir well.
  3. Gradually add 3 cups of flour, mixing until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the remaining 3 cups of flour, kneading until the dough is elastic and slightly sticky.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf or desired shape.
  8. Place the shaped dough into a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet.
  9. Let the dough rise again until nearly doubled, about 30-45 minutes.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  11. Remove from oven, cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
