Ingredients

  • 2 c. all-purpose or unbleached flour
  • 1/4 c. crumbled cooked bacon
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 2/3 to 1 c. milk
  • 1 Tbsp. margarine or butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and grease a cookie sheet.
  2. Lightly spoon flour into a measuring cup and level off.
  3. In a large bowl, combine flour, crumbled cooked bacon, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender or fork until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
  5. Add milk; stir with a fork until the mixture leaves the sides of the bowl and forms a soft, moist dough.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead 5 or 6 times until no longer sticky.
  7. Shape the dough into a ball.
  8. Place on the prepared cookie sheet and flatten into an 8-inch circle.
  9. Score the top surface into 8 wedges with a sharp knife.
  10. Bake at 400°F for 21 to 26 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Brush with melted margarine or butter.
  12. Cut into wedges to serve.
