- In large bowl, combine all-purpose and whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt.
- Cut in shortening and buttermilk.
- Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead for 10 minutes.
- Shape into a 7-inch round loaf.
- Cut a cross on top of dough with a sharp knife.
- Bake at 375° in a preheated oven for 40 minutes.
- Remove from oven.
- Combine 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Brush top of bread with sugar syrup and bake 5 minutes longer.
