Ingredients

  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 c. currants
  • 1/4 c. vegetable shortening
  • 1 1/4 c. buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. In large bowl, combine all-purpose and whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt.
  2. Cut in shortening and buttermilk.
  3. Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead for 10 minutes.
  4. Shape into a 7-inch round loaf.
  5. Cut a cross on top of dough with a sharp knife.
  6. Bake at 375° in a preheated oven for 40 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven.
  8. Combine 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  9. Brush top of bread with sugar syrup and bake 5 minutes longer.
