Basic Boiled Shrimp
Ingredients
- 4 bay leaves ⓘ
- 20 peppercorns
- 12 whole cloves ⓘ
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried marjoram ⓘ
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil ⓘ
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme ⓘ
- 1/8 teaspoon caraway seed ⓘ
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds ⓘ
- 1/8 teaspoon cumin seed ⓘ
- 1/4 teaspoon fennel seed ⓘ
- 8 cups water ⓘ
- 1 large lemon, quartered ⓘ
- 1 clove garlic, minced ⓘ
- 2 lbs large shrimp, peeled,deveined ⓘ
Instructions
- In a double or triple thickness of cheesecloth, combine all the spices (first 11 ingredients).
- Secure the packet with a piece of string.
- Combine water, lemon, garlic, and spice bag together in a dutch oven.
- Bring the water to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 3 minutes.
- Add shrimp and return to a boil.
- Boil shrimp for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Drain thoroughly and chill.
- Serve with cocktail sauce.
