Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 6 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 3/4 c. warm water
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 3 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. soft shortening

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, sprinkle yeast into warm water; let stand a few minutes then stir until dissolved.
  2. Add 3 1/4 cups of flour, sugar, salt, and shortening to the yeast mixture.
  3. Blend at low speed, then beat 2 minutes at medium speed or beat by hand.
  4. Beat in remaining flour by hand.
  5. Cover and let rise until doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
  6. Stir batter, beating hard for 30 seconds.
  7. Divide the batter evenly into 2 greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pans.
  8. Let rise until doubled in size, about 20 minutes.
  9. Bake in a moderate oven at 375°F (190°C) for 40 to 50 minutes.
