- In large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups flour, oats, sugar, yeast and salt.
- In saucepan, heat water, milk and margarine until warm (120°to 130°).
- Add to flour mixture until well moistened; beat at medium speed for 3 minutes.
- By hand, stir in enough remaining flour to make a firm dough.
- Lightly grease large bowl; put dough onto lightly floured surface and knead 5 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Shape into a ball and place into greased bowl, turning once.
- Cover and let rise in warm place 30 minutes or until double in size.
- Grease two 8 x 4-inch or 9 x 5-inch loaf pans. Punch dough down, cover and let rest for 10 minutes.
- Divide dough in half.
- Shape into 2 loaves and place in pans.
- Brush lightly with melted butter.
- Sprinkle with oats, if desired.
- Cover and let rise until nearly double in size.
- Heat oven to 375°.
- Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until dark golden brown.
- Remove from pans and cool on wire rack.
- Makes 2 loaves.
