Ingredients

  • 6 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup Crisco
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 3 tablespoons lukewarm water

Instructions

  1. The night before, mix together 1 package of yeast, 1 cup of water, and 1 cup of flour in a bowl.
  2. Let the mixture set in a warm place overnight to ferment.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine 6 cups of bread flour, 1/3 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/3 cup of Crisco.
  4. Add the fermented starter from the previous night to the dry ingredients.
  5. Stir in 1 cup of milk and 3 tablespoons of lukewarm water until a sticky dough forms.
  6. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 2 hours.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a greased baking sheet or in a loaf pan.
  10. Bake for approximately 45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  11. Allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
