Ingredients

  • cherry pie filling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cake mix as directed on the box and pour into a 13 x 9-inch pan.
  2. Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes, then cool completely.
  3. Empty the cherry pie filling into a baking dish and bake for 10 minutes, then cool for about 20 minutes.
  4. Remove the cake from the pan, sitting right side up.
  5. Cut all sides off the cake to create clean edges.
  6. Slice the cake in half lengthwise to create two layers.
  7. Carefully remove the top layer using a spatula.
  8. Place the bottom layer back into the 13 x 9-inch pan.
  9. Spread the baked cherries evenly over the bottom layer.
  10. Replace the top layer carefully and spread with whipped cream or Cool Whip.
  11. Sprinkle chopped pecans on top of the cake.
  12. Slice and serve. Yields 10 to 12 servings.
