Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 or 3 whole cloves
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1/2 lemon, sliced with peel on
  • 6 medium cooking apples

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar, water, cloves, cinnamon stick, and lemon in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Pare the apples, core them, cut into eights, and add to the syrup.
  3. Cook slowly until the apples are tender, about 5 to 8 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool in the syrup.
  5. Remove spices and lemon slices before serving.
