Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 stick oleo (butter)

Instructions

  1. Combine graham cracker crumbs, shortening, 1 cup sugar, and 3 beaten egg yolks; beat together until smooth.
  2. Alternate adding the crumb mixture with 1 cup of milk until all are used, forming layers.
  3. Fold in 3 beaten egg whites gently into the mixture.
  4. Bake the layered mixture in preheated oven until set and golden, then let cool.
  5. In a saucepan, mix evaporated milk, 1 cup sugar, 3 egg yolks, and butter; cook over medium heat until thickened.
  6. Remove from heat, add vanilla extract, and spread the custard over the baked cake layers.
