Ingredients

  • 1 c. shortening
  • 3/4 c. sugar (I use less, about 1/2 c.)
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 2 lightly beaten eggs
  • 2 cakes or 3 pkg. dry yeast, dissolved in 1 c. lukewarm water
  • 5 1/2 to 6 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt

Instructions

  1. Mix shortening, sugar and boiling water in bowl.
  2. Let stand until cool or lukewarm.
  3. Stir in eggs and dissolved yeast.
  4. Add to mixture.
  5. Stir in flour; add salt.
  6. Work with hands for 30 minutes. (This is now done by the mixer on low before all flour is added.)
  7. Grease a bowl and place the dough into it.
  8. Use a very large bowl to allow for raising.
  9. Cover with a wet cloth and a loose-fitting lid.
  10. Leave in refrigerator overnight.
