- Brown the chopped onion in bacon dripping or shortening, then remove from the pan.
- Place 1/3 of the sliced cabbage in the pan, followed by half of the sliced bell pepper, one sliced tomato, and half of the browned onion.
- Layer with another 1/3 of the cabbage, remaining bell pepper, tomato, and onions.
- Sprinkle the remaining cabbage on top, add salt and pepper to taste.
- Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
