Ingredients

  • 2 oranges, thinly sliced
  • 7 to 8 tsp. whole cloves
  • 7 to 8 tsp. allspice
  • 7 to 8 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. Place orange slices on a greased wire rack.
  2. Place the wire rack on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake at 200°F (93°C) for 5 to 6 hours, removing slices as they dry.
  4. Cut the dried orange slices into eighths with shears.
  5. Place 1/4 cup of dried orange pieces, 1 teaspoon of cloves, 1 teaspoon of allspice, and 1 cinnamon stick into each Ziploc plastic bag.

Tips & Substitutions

For best results, ensure the orange slices are evenly spaced on the wire rack to allow for proper air circulation while drying. If whole spices are difficult to find, you can substitute with ground versions, but reduce the quantity to about 1/3. This dried spice mix is perfect for adding flavor to beverages or as a festive potpourri.

Serving Suggestions

This dried spice mix works wonderfully in festive beverages like mulled wine or cider. Consider pairing it with a warm dessert like apple pie or even using it to flavor syrups for pancakes. It also makes a charming gift when packaged in decorative bags, perfect for sharing during the holiday season.

Storage & Reheating

Store the dried spice mix in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. It can last for several months if kept sealed. To refresh the aroma, lightly crush the spices before using. You can also add a couple of fresh orange peels if you need a little extra scent when using the mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when the orange slices are fully dried?

The orange slices are fully dried when they feel leathery and are no longer sticky to the touch. They should be fragile enough to snap or break into pieces without much effort. Check them periodically during the baking process to avoid over-drying.

Can I use this spice mix for savory dishes?

While this spice mix is primarily designed for sweet applications, feel free to experiment! The warm spices can add depth to savory dishes, particularly in stews or marinades. Just be mindful of the sweetness from the dried oranges.

Is there a way to make this mix more intense in flavor?

Yes! For a more intense flavor, consider toasting the whole spices in a dry skillet for a few minutes before adding them to the mix. This process can enhance their natural oils and aromas, making them more fragrant and flavorful.
