- Scald milk. Add sugar, salt and shortening. Cool until lukewarm.
- Sprinkle yeast on warm water and stir.
- Put a little sugar in yeast water to dissolve. Combine milk mixture and 1 cup flour. Stir by hand.
- Add yeast and egg.
- Stir in remaining flour, a little at a time; beat after each addition until you have a soft dough.
- Cover and let rise in warm place, 1 to 1 1/2 hours until double.
- Turn out onto lightly floured board.
- Toss and coat with flour; knead about 15 times.
- Make balls.
- Coat with butter.
- Let rise in pan 30 to 40 minutes.
- Bake 25 to 30 minutes at 375°.
