Ingredients

  • 1 c. milk
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 3 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 egg
  • melted butter

Instructions

  1. Scald milk. Add sugar, salt and shortening. Cool until lukewarm.
  2. Sprinkle yeast on warm water and stir.
  3. Put a little sugar in yeast water to dissolve. Combine milk mixture and 1 cup flour. Stir by hand.
  4. Add yeast and egg.
  5. Stir in remaining flour, a little at a time; beat after each addition until you have a soft dough.
  6. Cover and let rise in warm place, 1 to 1 1/2 hours until double.
  7. Turn out onto lightly floured board.
  8. Toss and coat with flour; knead about 15 times.
  9. Make balls.
  10. Coat with butter.
  11. Let rise in pan 30 to 40 minutes.
  12. Bake 25 to 30 minutes at 375°.
