Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 envelopes dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup lukewarm water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Scald (don't boil) the whole milk and water; pour over shortening and salt.
  3. Cool to lukewarm temperature.
  4. In a separate bowl, dissolve dry yeast and sugar in lukewarm water.
  5. Add the yeast mixture to the cooled milk mixture.
  6. Add 4 cups of flour and beat well.
  7. Add remaining flour gradually.
  8. Adjust flour to ensure the mixture is not too sticky; add a little more if needed.
  9. Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled in size.
  10. Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead.
  11. Divide into 3 large loaves or 5 small loaves.
  12. Place into loaf pans and let rise until doubled in size.
  13. Bake at 350°F until the tops are brown.
  14. When cool, slice and butter slices.
  15. Wrap with foil and freeze if desired.
  16. Reheat when ready to serve.
