German Chocolate Layer Bars are decadent dessert bars featuring a rich coconut and pecan topping, chocolate chips, and gooey caramel, perfect for satisfying sweet cravings at gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. German chocolate cake mix
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup chopped nutmeats
  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 (14 oz.) pkg. Kraft caramels
  • 1 (16 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Grease and flour a 9 x 13-inch pan.
  2. Combine cake mix, butter, nuts, and 1/3 cup evaporated milk.
  3. Press half of the cake mixture into the prepared pan and bake at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes.
  4. Melt the caramels with the remaining 1/3 cup evaporated milk; spread over the baked layer.
  5. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top of the caramel layer, then add the remaining cake mixture over the chocolate chips.
  6. Spread lightly to cover the top.
  7. Bake for an additional 20 minutes at 350°F. Allow to cool before cutting.
