Ingredients

  • 4 c. flour
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. plus 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Measure and sift dry ingredients together.
  2. Cut in the shortening; stir in the buttermilk.
  3. When thoroughly mixed, turn onto a floured board.
  4. Knead and fold dough about 8 times, but keep the dough soft.
  5. Roll to about 1/2-inch thick and cut with floured cutter or a glass.
  6. Place on a baking pan and brush tops with melted butter.
  7. Bake at 450° for 12 to 15 minutes.
