Granny Buns

- Beat the active dry yeast, warm water, sugar, salt, and flour until smooth.
- Cover and let stand in a warm place for 15 minutes.
- Scald the milk and then cool it to warm temperature.
- Add the warm milk, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 cups flour, and 3 tablespoons shortening to the yeast mixture.
- Beat for 2 minutes with a mixer.
- Gradually stir in about 3 1/2 cups flour to form a very stiff dough.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness and fold in half.
- Repeat the rolling and folding process 4 more times.
- Divide the dough in half.
- Cover with a bowl and let rest for 10 minutes.
