Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1 c. warm water
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 1/4 c. milk
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. Beat the active dry yeast, warm water, sugar, salt, and flour until smooth.
  2. Cover and let stand in a warm place for 15 minutes.
  3. Scald the milk and then cool it to warm temperature.
  4. Add the warm milk, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 cups flour, and 3 tablespoons shortening to the yeast mixture.
  5. Beat for 2 minutes with a mixer.
  6. Gradually stir in about 3 1/2 cups flour to form a very stiff dough.
  7. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness and fold in half.
  8. Repeat the rolling and folding process 4 more times.
  9. Divide the dough in half.
  10. Cover with a bowl and let rest for 10 minutes.
