Ingredients

  • 4 quarts water, divided
  • 5 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup red hot candies
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 12 whole cloves
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • Lemon slices

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, bring 1 quart of water and cranberries to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes or until berries begin to pop.
  3. Drain, reserving the liquid and berries.
  4. Put the berries through a fine strainer or food mill to extract the pulp.
  5. In a Dutch oven or large kettle, combine the sugar, red hot candies, lemon juice, cranberry liquid and pulp, and remaining water.
  6. Add the whole cloves and cinnamon sticks.
  7. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until flavors meld, about 10 minutes.
  8. Serve hot, garnished with lemon slices and additional cinnamon sticks if desired.
