Homemade applesauce featuring warm cinnamon, vanilla, and lemon zest for a naturally sweet, aromatic treat perfect for snacking, baking, or family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 3 lb. apples (like Galas or McIntosh)
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 2-inch vanilla bean, halved lengthwise
  • 2 strips lemon zest
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. dry white wine
  • 2 1/2 c. water

Instructions

  1. Wash apples, cut in half, remove stems and cores, leaving skins intact.
  2. Place apples in a large pot.
  3. Add cinnamon, vanilla bean, lemon zest, lemon juice, sugar, white wine, and water to the pot.
  4. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, until apples are soft, about 30 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  7. Remove and discard the cinnamon stick and vanilla bean.
  8. Puree the apples and pan juices in a blender for a smoother sauce or process for a chunkier texture.
