Ingredients

  • 1 rounded Tbsp dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 rounded tsp salt
  • 2 cups very warm tap water
  • 6 Tbsp shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 5 cups unsifted flour

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the dry yeast in very warm tap water and let it sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add sugar, salt, shortening, and egg to the yeast mixture and stir well.
  3. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  7. Place the shaped dough into a greased loaf pan and let it rise again until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
