Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 c. sorghum molasses
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 c. milk
  • 4 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 c. evaporated applesauce or old-fashioned dried apples cooked to make a thick filling
  • spices to taste (season apples)

Instructions

  1. Mix thoroughly the flour, salt, soda and baking powder by sifting together 3 times.
  2. Cream shortening, then add sugar, a little at a time, blending well.
  3. Add sorghum and mix thoroughly. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.
  4. To this, add flour and milk alternately and beat until smooth.
  5. Place mixture, 3/8-inch thick, in floured 9-inch cake pans.
  6. Bake at 375° for 18 minutes.
  7. This should make 6 layers.
  8. When cool, stack up layers, using applesauce generously between each layer.
