Ingredients

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • miniature semi-sweet chocolate pieces

Instructions

  1. Line a cookie sheet with brown paper.
  2. In a small mixer bowl, beat egg whites, vanilla, and cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
  3. Gradually add sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
  4. Fill a decorating bag fitted with a 1/2-inch round tip with the meringue mixture, filling it half full.
  5. Beginning at the head end, squeeze the bag gently, moving the tip in a clockwise motion to form a question mark shape.
  6. For the lower body, continue squeezing as you move the tip about 2 1/2 inches to the right, then back left, then right again, releasing pressure as you pull up the tip to form the body shape.
  7. Place mini semi-sweet chocolate pieces on the head to create the eye and beak.
  8. Bake in a 300°F (150°C) oven for about 15 minutes.
  9. Turn off the oven and let the cookies dry inside with the door closed for about 30 minutes.
